Exchange of experience with the US nuclear regulation authority
12.12.2022
Licensing and safety assessment of new nuclear power plants were the main topics of the workshop organized by the PAA in Warsaw. The event was attended by American experts from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of the United States of America (US NRC).
The workshop, organized on December 5-9th, was a continuation of meetings between specialists of the PAA and experts from the American nuclear regulation authority. The meeting was attended by dozens of participants who discussed the challenges faced by the nuclear regulators related to licensing and inspection of the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country.
The American experts presented a model for licensing nuclear power plants in the U.S.A. and a schedule and organization of assessing an application for a construction permit. The workshop participants also discussed the Polish model of licensing nuclear power plants and the possibility of drawing on American experience.
The PAA works closely with the US NRC on nuclear safety and radiation protection. In 2022, 7 employees of the agency completed several months’ training internships at the US NRC training center in Tennessee and at the construction site of the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia. The cooperation between the Polish and American nuclear regulators is important in the context of the PAA's preparations to regulate the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant. The PAA will control this process at every stage, starting from the design phase, through the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant
