13.12.2021

The principles of nuclear power plants licensing were one of the topics of the meeting attended by the President and Vice-President of the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) and representatives of Polish Nuclear Power Plants Ltd. (PEJ) and the Southern Nuclear, American operator of nuclear power plants. PAA is preparing for its role as a supervisor in the construction and operation of future Polish nuclear power plants.

Experience and knowledge exchange was the main goal of the meeting organized on December 8 by the company PEJ and Southern Nuclear. The meeting was attended by Dr. Łukasz Młynarkiewicz, PAA President, Vice President Mr. Andrzej Głowacki, and the  PAA experts. The specialists discussed the issues related to the licensing process for the construction of nuclear power plants. Southern Nuclear as a well experienced entity operates several nuclear power plants, including the two newly built AP1000 reactors at the Vogtle 3 and 4 nuclear power plant. Southern Nuclear has also been managing the Farley and Hatch nuclear power plants and the two previously built Vogtle units for years.

PAA is preparing for its role in the process of building Polish nuclear power plants. The Agency - as a nuclear regulatory body - is to take care of nuclear safety in this process. After a thorough analysis of the documentation provided by the investor, the PAA President will issue a permit for the construction, start-up, operation and possible decommissioning of the nuclear power plant. Through regular inspections, the National Atomic Energy Agency will continuously supervise the safety of construction and operation of a nuclear power plant.
