This year, the National Radioactive Waste Repository in Różan is celebrating its 60th anniversary as the only repository of short-lived spent low- and intermediate-level radioactive sources and waste in Poland. This round anniversary is a good opportunity to introduce you to the issues of radioactive waste management, to which the entire current issue of the Bulletin is devoted.

In the first two articles: 'Radioactive waste in Poland' (page 5) and 'Changes necessary to implement the Polish radioactive waste management system in connection with the development of nuclear energy' (page 12), we give the floor to representatives of organizations responsible for for the implementation of radioactive waste management on a national scale, i.e. the Radioactive Waste Management Plant (ZUOP), which collects radioactive waste from its producers from all over Poland and prepares it for disposal, bearing direct responsibility for ensuring the safety of this procedure, and the Ministry of Climate and Environment (MKiŚ), supervising the RWMP and responsible for ensuring organizational and financial conditions for the continuous collection and storage of waste in a long-term, long-term perspective, taking into account, inter alia, plans for the development of nuclear energy in Poland.

The next two articles: 'Safety of radioactive waste management in Poland in the light of the requirements of the Joint Convention' (page 25) and 'Summary of the ARTEMIS mission in Poland' (page 40) are devoted to the mechanisms of independent, external regulatory control - the authors describe whether the safety management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel is ensured at an appropriate level by the organizations and bodies established for this purpose (ZUOP and MKiŚ) and whether it complies with international standards.
