PAA expands international cooperation - agreement with the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission of the Republic of Korea

The head of the polish nuclear regulatory authority of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Głowacki, and Gukhee YOO, chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission of the Republic of Korea, signed a cooperation agreement. As part of the cooperation, the nuclear regulatory authorities will exchange knowledge and experience in the field of nuclear safety.

The cooperation agreement was signed during the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. The agreement opens the way to broader cooperation in international training. The first training courses designed with Polish supervision in mind will take place in October this year.

– The Republic of Korea is a very important partner for the National Atomic Energy Agency – said Andrzej Głowacki, President of PAA – The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission of the Republic of Korea is an experienced regulator, it supervises nuclear facilities operating in Korea. Currently, two new facilities are under construction and another two are undergoing review for the construction permit. I hope that the regulatory cooperation established today will bring numerous benefits to both parties ­­– added the head of the Polish nuclear regulatory agency.

The agreement signed today in Vienna assumes mutual exchange of experience and information, including:

• the legal framework for nuclear safety and radiological protection operating in Poland and South Korea, including regulations on radioactive materials, radiation monitoring and radioactive waste management;

• supervision of nuclear facilities;

• solutions used in case of emergency situations;

• transport of radioactive materials;

• information and communication activities.

The Korean side also expressed its willingness to share experiences regarding international cooperation with the supervision of the United Arab Emirates in the context of the construction of the power plant in Barakah.
