PAA expands network of monitoring stations for early detection of radioactive contamination

The National Atomic Energy Agency will expand the network of monitoring station for early detection of radioactive contamination. By the end of the year, a total of 15 new devices will monitor the eastern border of Poland. In the presence of the Minister of Climate - Mr Michał Kurtyka and the Minister of the Environment - Mr Michał Woś, letters of intent were signed with Voivods and a framework agreement with the Director of General Directorate of the State Forests.

The new stations will strengthen the system of detection of radioactive contamination transmitted in the atmosphere. The expansion of the monitoring station network and its compaction will allow the National Atomic Energy Agency to promptly detect radiation events from across the eastern border of Poland. As a result, the Agency will be able to react faster in crisis situations and better inform the public about the need for any remedial action.

Due to the expansion, the number of stations for early detection of radioactive contamination on the eastern border will increase from 6 to 19 stations. The exact locations of 13 new stations will be indicated after analyzing, among others, terrain, natural and urban surroundings, as well as the availability of telecommunications infrastructure. The operation also envisages the replacement of two old type stations with new ones.

The expansion of the network of monitoring station for early detection of radioactive contamination is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

Early detection of radioactive contamination is aimed at enabling ongoing assessment of the country's radiation situation, with particular emphasis on population safety. The system allows quick identification of radiation hazards.

PMS (Permanent Monitoring System) stations provide monitoring of the level of ionizing radiation in the country 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
