PAA visit to ASN and IRSN. Polish-French Memorandum on further co-operation
11.07.2022
The President of the PAA and the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ASN) were discussing the regulatory challenges of the Polish Nuclear Power Programme and the planned actions. Polish delegation also met up with the management of the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) in France.
The main purpose of the meeting of Polish and French delegations was to discuss the planned PAA actions ensuing from the Polish Nuclear Power Programme and to sign the Memorandum of Understanding on further co-operation. Small modular reactors (SMR) were also among the topics of the talks held between the President of the PAA Dr Łukasz Młynarkiewicz and the Chairman of the ASN Bernard Doroszczuk.
PAA is preparing for the implementation of regulatory tasks related to the to-be-built first nuclear power plants in Poland. French experts who already exercise control over 56 reactors in France will be licensing successive units. In the nearest future, France plans to build six nuclear reactors. The ASN also conducts activities involving licensing and oversight of the European Pressure Reactor (EPR). The ASN experts were explaining the process during the PAA visit to the construction site of the Unit 3 at the NPP Flamanville.
Long-standing co-operation of the PAA and the ASN
During the meeting at ASN headquarters, the PAA President and the ASN Chairman signed the Memorandum of Understanding on further co-operation between Polish and French regulatory authorities. The document is to ensure the continuation of co-operation in exchange of technical information and nuclear safety. The first such MoU between the PAA and the ASN was signed back in mid-2012.
Planned training with French experts
As part of the visit to Paris, PAA delegation met up with the management of L'Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN). Established in 2001, the Institute is a national public service expert in radiation and nuclear risks. The main topic was the planned training for PAA staff in collaboration with the IRSN.
Polish delegation was also shown nuclear installations in the Paris suburb IRSN research centre. The visit to the ASN and the IRSN took place between 6 and 8 July.
