03.06.2024

President of the PAA Andrzej Głowacki took part in the 15th National Conference - Ionizing Radiation in Medicine PJOMED 2024. This year's edition focuses on radiological procedures, especially important from the point of view of radiation protection of the patient.

Participants of the 15th PJOMED Conference

PJOMED conferences have been organized for several years by the National Center for Radiological Protection in Health Care, among others, to doctors and radiation protection specialists. The National Atomic Energy Agency regularly participates in these events. – Conferences provide an opportunity to exchange experience in the field of medical law, applications of new technologies in medicine and new research fields – emphasized Andrzej Głowacki during his speech at the opening of the 15th PJOMED Conference.

This year, conference participants discuss radiological procedures used in the field of radiotherapy and interventional radiology, which are aimed at radiation protection of the patient. As Andrzej Głowacki noted, for the National Atomic Energy Agency, radiation protection is one of the foundations of its activities. – As the PAA, we decide on issuing licenses to conduct activities related to exposure to ionizing radiation, including in the field of nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. These are, for example, isotope laboratories. Our inspectors then supervise these activities, but also the MARIA research reactor, which produces isotopes used in nuclear medicine - said the head of the nuclear regulatory authority.

The number of entities that use ionizing radiation is gradually increasing. Currently, in Poland, 5,143 (as of May 31) entities pf various types use ionizing radiation for medical, scientific and research or production purposes.

This year's PJOMED conference takes place on June 3 and 4 in a hybrid form in Łódź.
