On January 18, the Chief Deputy of the Head of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Frank A. Rose met in Warsaw with Andrzej Głowacki, the acting President of the PAA, and Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment.
Andrzej Głowacki and Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński presented an action plan for the coming years aimed at implementing the Polish nuclear power programme and the related challenges in the area of development of competences and staff dealing with physical security. During the meeting in Warsaw, cooperation with the NNSA to date was discussed in the field of physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities and safeguards of radioactive sources. Further tightening of cooperation and development of exchange of experience in the above areas was agreed.
Physical protection primarily concerns protection against sabotage, terrorist attack, theft or other unauthorized access. Cooperation in the forum of the International Atomic Energy Agency in relation to physical protection and the ongoing war in Ukraine were also discussed.
Safety of nuclear materials
Ensuring a high level of nuclear safety and physical protection is one of the important objectives of the nuclear power plant construction program in Poland. The National Atomic Energy Agency conducts nuclear supervision in the area of physical protection and protection of radioactive sources. PAA inspectors also check, using the national nuclear material accounting and control system, whether all nuclear materials in Poland are used for peaceful purposes.
What does the NNSA do?
The National Nuclear Security Administration is an institution of the United States Department of Energy. It is responsible for strengthening national security and effective protection of nuclear materials and radioactive sources. NNSA also deals with non-proliferation, i.e. activities for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and counteracting nuclear terrorism.
