Thanks to the participation in the Board, Poland has a direct impact on the functioning of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including the recommendations issued by the IAEA regarding the safe use of nuclear energy and the Agency's activities in the field of non-proliferation and safeguards.

What is the IAEA Board of Governors?

The Board of Governors comprises 35 out of 172 member states of the IAEA. The Board of Governors is one of the two policy-making bodies of the IAEA, along with the annual General Conference of IAEA Member States. The Board examines and makes recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA's financial statements, programme and budget. It considers applications for membership, approves safeguards agreements and the publication of the IAEA's safety standards.

The General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approved the election of Poland as a member of the Board of Governors on September 24, 2020.

What does the International Atomic Energy Agency?

IAEA was established in 1957 (Poland is a founding member). The Agency is a specialized, autonomous agency of the UN system, established to coordinate all activities related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the world. It supports the Member States in the use of nuclear technologies, and also deals with the development of uniform standards for nuclear safety and radiological protection, and with the implementation of tasks under the international non-proliferation regime.
