The Sixth European Nuclear Safety Conference
23.06.2022
Nuclear safety in times of severe crises was at the heart of the sixth European Nuclear Safety Conference. The event gathered the heads of European nuclear safety regulators. Poland was represented by PAA President, Dr Łukasz Młynarkiewicz.
The conference was held under the auspices of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) in co-operation with the European Commission. The event was originally scheduled for 2021 but due to Covid-related measures it was postponed to 2022 to be eventually held on 20 and 21 June this year.
ENSREG representatives gathered at the EC headquarters in Brussels and on-line were debating on the key current radiation protection issues. The leading topic of the debate was Russian aggression on Ukraine and the ensuing risk to nuclear facilities. The debate was joined by e.g. Oleh Korikov, Acting Chairman – Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety in Ukraine.
The participants also focused on post-Covid-19 crisis. Thereafter, they addressed the public participation in the waste management and long-term operation of nuclear power plants. The regulatory challenges posed by innovative designs such as small modular reactors (SMR) were also on the table.
ENSREG meeting
The sixth European Nuclear Safety Conference was accompanied by the 49th ENSREG meeting. The representatives of European nuclear regulatory bodies discussed work performed as part of Topical Peer Review (TPR). In Poland, TPR will be performed at our research reactor MARIA. The meeting was also devoted to SMRs and the risks posed by the war in Ukraine.
ENSREG tasks
Established in 2007, ENSREG is a group of nuclear regulatory bodies from EU member states. A representative of the European Commission also takes part in the Group’s work. ENSREG possesses advisory powers in the EU.
ENSREG’s goal is to facilitate co-operation and exchange of information among EU member states in nuclear safety and nuclear waste management. As part of ENSREG, also topical peer reviews of nuclear facilities are performed.
