What is a sievert? Is one sievert a lot or a little? – we encourage you to watch our new video (not only) about ionizing radiation
01.09.2023
The new animated video is another part of the National Atomic Energy Agency's educational and informational campaign. Learn about the types of ionizing radiation, find out what the effective dose is, and see the basic principles of radiation protection. Learn more with the PAA – we encourage you to watch the material.
Ionizing radiation is a phenomenon that has always been with us. We can distinguish natural sources of this radiation, such as the cosmos, but also the Earth's crust or... the inside of our bodies. Man is also a source of radionuclides, or radioactive isotopes. Every day we also come into contact with artificial sources of ionizing radiation. It is used, among other things, in X-ray devices, industry, medicine or scientific research. For more than 40 years, the National Atomic Energy Agency has been exercising regulatory control of the use of ionizing radiation in Poland. The agency issues licenses, but also regularly inspects entities that use ionizing radiation in their daily activity.
How much radiation do we receive from natural sources, how much during X-ray examinations and how much, for example, during a flight from Warsaw to Chicago? What are the types of ionizing radiation and their penetration power? Is one sievert a lot and is radiation at any dose harmful? What are the basic principles of radiation protection? Take a look at PAA's latest animated video, in which we answer these and many other questions about ionizing radiation.
