Myanmar - Medical activities, health education and medical screening in the Irrawaddy Delta

The Polish Medical Mission Association has been carrying out projects to improve the healthcare of Wakema Township inhabitants since 2016. In 2019, the first module of another two-year project was completed, as part of which a ship serving as a mobile clinic was purchased and equipped. Thanks to this investment, doctors from the Wakema hospital are able to provide basic medical care to outlying villages in the township which cannot be reached by road. Within less than two months from the opening of the clinic, medical consultations were provided to 1,850 patients. The project also involved training the medical staff of the Wakema hospital which was additionally equipped with a new power generator. Screening tests and vaccinations against hepatitis B (vaccinating almost 2,200 township inhabitants. Due to the fact that the aim of the project was to improve the health of the local community, the donor together with the project’s local partner, the Wakema Township Association, conducted preventive activities related to the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) sector. In the project, ten rainwater tanks were built, allowing inhabitants access to potable water. In the Irrawwady river delta, clean water has to be obtained in this way due to high salinity of ground waters. The project will be continued in 2020
