14 Abrams tanks to arrive in Poland by June at the latest

12.04.2023

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's second day in the United States of America included visits to the Lockheed Martin facilities and the Anniston Army Depot. Both of these sites are currently producing heavy equipment that will be delivered to the Polish Army in the coming months – 14 M1 Abrams tanks will arrive as early as June 2023. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with representatives of the US military industry to strengthen the smooth implementation of Polish-American military cooperation. We are working to speed up the deliveries and potentially move some of the equipment servicing and ammunition production processes to Poland. Investments of this scale in our country's security are possible thanks to a sealed and improved state budget.

Strong Polish Army and strong allies are the guarantee of our security

In 2023, we are allocating 4% of GDP to defence investments. The purchase of American military equipment for the Polish troops is part of the expansion of our defence potential. Our soldiers are being equipped with Polish-made equipment, but also with state-of-the-art technology manufactured in the United States of America.

We are also working to move some of the technical processes from America to Poland – the production of ammunition as well as the servicing of equipment can take place in our country. Such investments will bring us important technologies, new jobs and strengthen our security.

“It’s important to me that we establish a support centre and a centre for servicing and maintaining combat readiness of Abrams tanks for the whole of Europe in Poland. And this is possible, it’s one of the things I am discussing here,” stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. “I have spoken to the US Vice President so that Polish technical and engineering solutions can be used to strengthen this Polish-American technical and military alliance,” he added.

Supplying the Polish army with additional American military equipment

Implementing Polish-American military contracts as quickly and efficiently as possible was the main theme of the second day of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's visit to the United States of America. The head of the Polish government viewed the F-35 combat aircraft being manufactured for Poland, as well as the M1 Abrams tanks being prepared for our army.

US partners have confirmed that the first 14 modern Abrams tanks will be delivered to our troops as early as June 2023 – this is part of the 366 M1 Abrams tanks ordered, and the 32 F-35 aircraft ordered will reach the Polish army in the next few years.

“The purpose of this visit is to accelerate the delivery of state-of-the-art American equipment to Poland. We started one year ago with the signing of contracts, and today we could already see the first structural elements of the F-35,” emphasised Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at the aircraft facilities.

Repaired state budget allows for ground-breaking modernisation of the army

Already within the next few years, our military will be equipped with world's best M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks and fifth-generation F-35A multi-role fighters. In addition, the Polish sky will be guarded by the proven PATRIOT system batteries, and Polish soldiers will operate HIMARS launchers. Such swift and effective modernisation of our army is possible thanks to sustainable public finances.

“It all started with the repair of public finances. Neither would we have been able to sign this contract for the F-35 a year ago, nor would I be standing here today if it were not for the budget repair. It is thanks to this that we have, over the past few years, tripled the budget for defence spending. It all started with the repair of the state budget,” pointed out the head of the Polish government.

Our country's budget has been sealed and refined in recent years and tax crime has been minimised. Today, we have additional funds to invest in our country's security, while at the same time we were able to reduce taxes for citizens and entrepreneurs.

Poland and the United States are closer today than ever before

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is visiting the United States of America from 11 to 13 April 2023. This is a continuation of the strengthening of our bilateral relations, directly following President Joe Biden's visit to Warsaw.

“The alliance with the United States is the absolute foundation of our security. Our security rests on two pillars: economic cooperation and defence cooperation. I am going to the United States to strengthen both these pillars, to reinforce their foundation, to build them in cooperation with our allies,” stressed the head of the Polish government before flying to Washington.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington. The talks covered important bilateral issues in the field of investment, security and international policy. The final day of the visit of the head of the Polish government to the United States of America will include participation in a debate at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund and a series of interviews for the US media.
