Another meeting of the Medical Council – the government considers expert feedback

26.07.2021

Yet another videoconference meeting of the Medical Council took place on 26 July 2021, with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Health Minister Adam Niedzielski also attending. The topics discussed included accelerating the vaccination process, recommendations to consider compulsory vaccinations for medical staff and teachers, as well as counteracting the aggressive actions by anti-vaccination movements.

Counteracting the fourth wave of COVID-19 – the primary topic of the Medical Council’s meeting

The coronavirus is a serious threat to our life and health. This is why the government has been consulting all vital decisions taken in the last several months with a group of experts in the field of medicine.

The Medical Council is an auxiliary body assisting Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. The Council comprises the Chairman – prof. dr hab n. med. Andrzej Horban, who is the PM’s main COVID-19 advisor – as well as more than fifteen other medical experts. During its Monday meeting, the Council discussed the issues related to the 4th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other topics included accelerating the vaccination process, incentives, as well as compulsory vaccinations for teachers and medical staff. Counteracting the aggressive behaviour of anti-vaccination movements and offering vaccination at primary health care facilities that have not offered such possibility before were also discussed.

The government makes every effort to ensure that as many people as possible get vaccinated

Accelerating the COVID-19 vaccination process was among the main topics of the Council’s meeting. The government has put a lot of effort into encouraging as many Polish citizens as possible to take the vaccine. Announcing the meeting with the Medical Council during a conference in Gdańsk, PM Mateusz Morawiecki said: “in the coming days, we will develop even broader concepts, as we have already devoted the maximum available amount of effort, as well as providing resources, incentives, bonuses and premiums for all sorts of groups, including doctors and vaccination teams, to encourage as many people as we can to get vaccinated. However, if the fourth wave proves to be a material threat, we cannot rule out taking further-reaching measures.” This is the reason behind the Medical Council meetings – to discuss, react and counteract if needed. All this helps protect the life and well-being of Polish citizens against the virus.

Compulsory vaccinations for teachers and medical staff

The Medical Council recommends introducing compulsory vaccinations against COVID-19 for:

  • health care workers, especially ones who come into direct contact with infected patients;
  • teachers.

It is common knowledge that it is easy to get infected with the coronavirus at hospitals. Hospitals house many seriously ill people who face an acute course of COVID-19 or even death upon infection. Therefore, the Medical Council recommends that compulsory vaccinations be introduced for health care workers. “It is particularly the health care service that should be immunised against COVID-19 as they are our doctors, nurses but also diagnosticians and laboratory technicians who serve patients and other citizens”, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki remarked.

The education of children and youth is a crucial aspect. There is much talk about remote learning negatively affecting the physical and psychological health of students. The government makes every effort to handle the pandemic situation at schools by providing post-remote learning support programmes, as well as helping schools counteract the impact of the pandemic. We all know just how crucial vaccination is in this regard, and as such, the Medical Council recommends mandatory vaccinations for teachers.

Counteracting aggressive actions by the anti-vaccination movements

A brawl broke out in front of a vaccination centre in Grodzisk Mazowiecki. Members of an anti-vaccination group attempted to force their way inside the centre but were stopped by security. Things got physical during the scuffle. “Actions that took place in Grodzisk Mazowiecki are truly unacceptable. Such aggression should be universally condemned, and we wish to firmly oppose any behaviour of this kind”, said Prime Minister Morawiecki. Counteracting aggressive actions by the anti-vaccination movements was discussed at the Medical Council meeting as well.
