Meeting of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki with the President of Portugal
22.08.2023
Security and bilateral economic and trade cooperation were the main topics of the conversation between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The politicians met on 22 August 2023 in Warsaw to discuss current bilateral issues and the international situation.
Talks on Poland's security are a priority
The head of the Polish government and the Portuguese president discussed the security situation in NATO's eastern flank. Poland is safe today, thanks to the strength of its army, but also thanks to cooperation with its allies. The most recent developments in this respect are the arrangements of the NATO summit in Vilnius this July – further strengthening of our region of Europe is currently one of the priorities of the North Atlantic Alliance.
The politicians also discussed prospects for cooperation in the defence sector. The Polish defence industry offers state-of-the-art technologies and proven solutions, the export of which supports our economy.
Polish economy benefits from trade with Portugal
Polish-Portuguese bilateral cooperation in the field of economy and trade is very good. For years, Poland has recorded a positive trade balance in commodity turnover with Portugal, which has been steadily increasing since 2018. In 2022, the positive balance of commodity turnover in favour of Poland reached its highest level yet. At the same time, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki encouraged further investments in the Polish market, which will result in more jobs.
The leaders also discussed current EU issues. They discussed solutions in the field of the migration and asylum policy of the European Union and the planned expansion of the community. Poland’s position on key issues remains unchanged – defending the interests of Poland and its citizens is paramount.
