Minister Konrad Szymański stressed that the European Union's reaction to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, carried out in undeniable violation of the fundamental principles of international law, will determine Europe's role and position for decades to come.

Further, he pointed to the need to agree upon further-reaching financial and energy sanctions, as well as maintain close transatlantic coordination, and prepare a reconstruction plan for Ukraine.

The ministers' debate on this issue was a preparation for the informal meeting of heads of state and government to be held in Paris on 11 March.

The General Affairs Council also discussed current instruments for the protection of the rule of law and the role of the European Union institutions in light of the conclusions of the Conference on the Future of Europe.
