Poland - NATO cornerstone in the region
13.11.2024
Prime Minister Donald Tusk held talks with the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Mark Rutte. The meeting took place in Warsaw. This was Mr Rutte’s first visit to Poland as head of NATO. Both he and the Polish Prime Minister share the outlook on the current geopolitical situation. Due to its efforts to build a modern army, Poland is becoming the cornerstone of NATO's presence in the region. There is also full agreement concerning the fact that Ukrainian matters need to be discussed with Ukraine at the table.
Poland's expanding role in NATO
Poland is consistently bolstering its army and increasing defence spending. The next year’s budget assumes expenditures of up to 4.7% of Poland’s GDP, the highest among NATO member states.
I was glad to hear Secretary General stating that he fully understands Poland’s needs. . . Due to the enormous effort in terms of bolstering the military and increasing defence spending, Poland is becoming the cornerstone of NATO policy and NATO's presence at this critical time and region,
Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated after the meeting.
He outlined the Polish efforts concerning erecting new fortifications and securing the country’s eastern border as part of the Shield East Initiative.
This border is crucial for both NATO and the European Union. . . Poland will continue to invest money and make all efforts to make it impervious for any possible aggressors or enemies,
the Polish Prime Minister declared.
Our country's military efforts are recognised by our NATO partners.
Poland serves as a role model as far as defence spending is concerned. . . You are expanding your military and have a presence in Latvia and Romania. You have participated in Kosovo and Iraq missions. Poland is hosting a NATO battle group, strengthening the defence of the eastern flank and contributing to the defence of the entire eastern border, together with the other Baltic States,
NATO Secretary General pointed out.
Mr Tusk noted that he shares the outlook on the global and regional geopolitical situation with the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
Ukrainian matters need to be discussed with Ukraine at the table
Donald Tusk reminded of his statement after returning from the European Political Community summit and the informal European Council meeting in Budapest - Ukrainian matters need to be discussed with Ukraine at the table.
I have already made efforts to engage EU prime ministers and presidents to make it a golden rule. I want all EU Member States to make sure that any future negotiations concerning ending the war or freezing the conflict, should involve countries forming NATO's eastern flank, not to mention Ukraine,
the Prime Minister pointed out.
In the coming days and weeks, Donald Tusk will hold talks concerning this matter with EU leaders.
Poland's contribution to supporting Ukraine is appreciated internationally.
Poland is providing a significant amount of aid to Ukraine, hosting more than a million Ukrainian refugees, supporting their education and offering them social benefits. This joint support of Ukraine is crucial - both for the coming winter and in the long term,
NATO Secretary General stated.
According to Mark Rutte, in view of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states should speed up their efforts on increasing the output of their respective defence industries.
The importance of transatlantic partnership
A good relationship with the United States, including military, economic, cultural and transatlantic cooperation - is the cornerstone of our security and growth.
We share the same view - that we need to do everything in our power to strengthen transatlantic security partnership. You can count on Poland and the Polish government in that regard. We are going to keep a steady course, since this is the basis of the Polish doctrine,
Donald Tusk noted.
According to the Prime Minister, the world is safe as long as the United States, Canada, the European Union and our non-EU friends - the United Kingdom and Norway - stick together. In this respect, Poland is going to be a reliable and consistent partner.
