Poles open their hearts for flood victims
17.09.2024
Every bit of help counts! Polish people rose to the challenge posed by the disaster and rushed to offer their support. The necessary goods are being delivered to the affected areas by the Government's Strategic Reserve Agency, NGOs and the general public. Numerous fundraisers were also launched. Government websites enable verifying whether a fundraiser was officially verified and approved. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the Great Orchestra of Christmas charity and the Scouts are also involved in the flood response.
Verified fundraisers and charity drives
The government has released the Government Strategic Reserve Agency funds, which enabled delivering necessary products to the flood-affected areas.
“We are sending lorries with supplies. Some are already being unloaded in Kłodzko and Nysa, mainly potable water, as well as energy-dense food for those who are exhausted by the disaster,”
said the Prime Minister during a press conference at the city stadium in Wrocław, accompanied by Jerzy Owsiak.
Faced by the disasters, Poles step up and organise charity drives, as well as fundraisers to help those who have lost their belongings. The Wrocław Stadium is currently hosting a collection point.
“I wanted to thank absolutely everybody who was involved in the disaster response from the very first hours. I believe it was Jerzy Owsiak, who used the exact phrase - outpouring of support. This is something that really makes us feel better. As the head of government, my job is merely to help coordinate the efforts,”
stated the Prime Minister.
The government is developing tools facilitating this coordination. The website of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration at zbiorki.gov.pl enables registering fundraisers. If you want to donate products or money, you should check whether a given drive is verified.
Non-governmental organisations extend support
NGOs were also involved in helping flood victims. Scouts are involved with reinforcing the dykes and disaster clean-up.
“As of today, hundreds of organisations - both local to the disaster-struck areas, as well as others from all over Poland, have already joined the relief efforts and their organisation,”
the Deputy Minister of Civil Society Marek Krawczyk noted.
The National Freedom Institute website lists NGOs involved in helping those most in need.
What is more, organisations and Volunteer Fire Service units impacted by the floods can apply for grants of 20 000 PLN provided by the Institute.
“The applications are open and they can request a grant today. It is intended for organisations impacted by the flood, as well as others - including Volunteer Fire Service units - that depleted their resources and need a quick boost,”
the Deputy Minister noted.
The aid and subsidies for impacted organisations will be disbursed as soon as possible.
The Orchestra helps flood victims
The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity also came to the aid of people impacted by the floods.
“Yesterday, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity announced that it would donate 40 million PLN for purchasing the most necessary products, including resources that can be bought immediately and distributed to the impacted areas,”
said Jerzy Owsiak in Wrocław.
A list of necessities to be delivered to the flood-affected areas has been compiled.
“Bottled water, bread and other food with extended shelf life, baby formula, hygiene supplies, paper towels, pet food, cleaning supplies, power banks, batteries, torches, blankets, sleeping bags, pillows,”
Mr. Owsiak said.
A fundraising account provided by the GOCC on its website enables everybody to donate money, which will be allocated for purchasing necessities, as well as medical supplies and equipment destroyed by the flood.
“We will disclose all expenses. . . . As a foundation, we want to make one thing clear - if this money is not spent on necessities right now, it will be kept safe, like in a Swiss bank. It will be waiting until the right equipment can be delivered - maybe in six months, a year or later - to replace what was destroyed,”
Jerzy Owsiak pointed out.
The GOCC has launched a special website (powodz.wosp.org.pl) and a helpline (+48 578 275 177) offering information on how to get involved in the relief effort.
