Prime Minister after a meeting with the Chancellor of Germany: The Polish-German relations are very good

11.09.2021

Economic relations, international security and cooperation within the European Union – these were the main topics discussed by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel. Thanking the Head of the German Government for years of cooperation, the Prime Minister stressed that while difficult topics were frequently discussed, the solid policy on the part of both our countries led to very good economic relations between them. Poland is one of Germany’s key partners. The Chancellor’s visit in Warsaw is one in a series of farewell trips to capital cities that are key for Berlin.

Poland ensures adequate protection of the external EU border with Belarus

Topics discussed during the visit included the situation at the border with Belarus. The Prime Minister emphasised that, despite increased migration pressure, Poland ensures adequate protection of the external EU border with Belarus, for which it is responsible.

“We have full support of the European Commission and of Germany to protect Europe against illegal immigration, movements that are beyond our control. Our positions are much closer now than they were during the dispute several years ago,” continued the Prime Minister. He added that we acknowledge and appreciate the support on the part of the EU and our partners in this situation. We cannot allow for new pathways for illegal migration into Europe to form.

The Polish-German economic relations are very good

“Our economic relations are very good; Polish companies increasingly cooperate with German companies and vice-versa,” said the Prime Minister during a joint conference with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel in Warsaw.

He added that Poland is one of Germany’s key partners. “There is an increasing number of joint ventures, not only those that involve international cooperation between large corporations, but also between small and medium enterprises,” said the Prime Minister.

Poland is a proponent of a militarily strong Europe

Discussions also concerned international security. “I am a proponent of a militarily strong Europe, so that we have the power to deter” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He stressed that defence expenditures of EU countries should be excluded from the excessive deficit procedure within the European Union. “Only an economically strong and socially cohesive Europe is capable of being a powerful, global player on the international arena,” he continued.

During the meeting with the Chancellor of Germany, the Prime Minister has once more stated the position of the Polish Government concerning the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. He pointed out that the project is not looked at solely from the point of view of energy security, but also in terms of long-term national security and the cost for the security of our region, especially of Ukraine.
