Prime Minister after meeting with Lithuanian President: the borders of Poland and Lithuania are the borders of the free world holding back the onslaught of despotism from the East
03.08.2023
In connection with provocations on our eastern border and escalating tensions in the region, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda. At the base of the 14th Suwałki Anti-Tank Regiment named after Józef Piłsudski, on the Suwałki Isthmus, the politicians discussed the security and protection of our countries' borders and responses to any provocations. The meeting of politicians in such a strategic place as the Suwałki Isthmus is intended to send a clear signal that our countries have a common position with regard to hybrid threats.
We will work to further secure the border with Belarus
Poland has been the subject of provocations and hybrid attacks from Belarus and Russia for years. This year alone, there have been more than 16 000 attempts to illegally cross our border. Cooperation with Lithuania is essential in the face of those provocations. At the same time, we remain in constant contact with our NATO allies. We are strengthening the protection of our borders and will not allow ourselves to be provoked.
- The Wagner Group close to our borders is a threat - we are ready for that - stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
We are aware of the potential threat from the Wagner Group troops stationed in Belarus, including in the context of destabilisation of the security on the Polish-Belarusian border. We must be prepared for all possible scenarios and strive to increase the awareness of our allies of possible provocations.
Poland and Lithuania are united in the common effort to secure our borders with Belarus
- With the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, I discussed the threats posed by the Wagner Group. According to our data, there are approximately 4,000 of them on the territory of Belarus - said the Prime Minister.
Therefore, as the President of Lithuania noticed, cooperation with allies is needed, as well as talks about plans in the event that the situation on the border escalates.
Poland is responding to the needs of our partners in the region. We attach great importance to strengthening the eastern border of NATO and military cooperation. That is why we have secured our eastern border and we are moving the Polish army to the eastern territory to strenghten the eastern border of NATO and the European Union. Our actions are appreciated by our partners in Brussels, Washington and London.
Poland is safe with the strength of our army and the alliances we are in
The safety of all Polish people is our priority, which is why we have built the barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border. The 5.5-metre-high structure protects us against the migrants from the territory of Belarus crossing our border illegally. The implementation of the investment has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of incidents related to migration pressure.
Today, the security of our country is based on our own defence capability and on security guarantees from our allies. Approximately 11,000 troops from allied countries - including those from the USA, the UK, Canada, Romania and Croatia - are currently stationed in our country. Moreover, allied forces are present in Poland as part of the NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group on the eastern border.
- Let us not underestimate any threats. We are doing our best to strengthen the Polish army, to modernise it and to strengthen our alliances.
