22.01.2025
The cooperation between the European Union and Norway, as well as regional security in the context of the war in Ukraine, were the main topics discussed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Norway’ Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Wednesday. The Polish Prime Minister traveled to Oslo directly from Strasbourg, where he had presented his vision for Europe and the priorities of Poland’s EU Council Presidency at a plenary session of the European Parliament.
EU–Norway Cooperation
In his first visit outside the EU following the official inauguration of Poland’s EU Council Presidency, the Prime Minister emphasized the strategic importance of collaboration between the EU and Norway.
As the European Union, we see Norway as our most valuable partner in matters of security, defence, and energy
- said Donald Tusk during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
The European Union and Norway maintain very close relations. Although Norway is not an EU member state, it participates in the Schengen Area, underscoring the high level of cooperation between the two sides.
We are mutually dependent in the best sense of the word. A strong economic and energy situation is in the interest of both Norway and the European Union. These good relations and mutual benefits are also long-term, which I find particularly significant in today’s world
– noted the Polish Prime Minister.
Energy is the best example of these exceptionally close relations. Referring to his earlier address in Strasbourg, the Polish Prime Minister assured that the EU intends to pay greater attention to energy pricing.
Our goal is affordable energy so that both the EU and Norwegian economies can genuinely compete with other global economic powers. That is why Norway’s role here is absolutely crucial
- the Prime Minister emphasized.
It is also vital that Norway and the European Union effectively safeguard common interests without competing against each other.
The Importance of Polish-Norwegian Relations
During the bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre acknowledged Poland’s significant role in the EU and its leadership in navigating current geopolitical changes.
You have an important responsibility for European cooperation, especially given the geopolitical shifts we are facing
- emphasized the Norwegian Prime Minister.
Both leaders agreed on the necessity of close cooperation between Poland and Norway.
There are many reasons why we must cherish something extraordinary in today’s politics: the very stable relationship between Poland and Norway, based on shared interests, views, and values
- said Donald Tusk.
The close partnership between Warsaw and Oslo is also particularly evident in defence industry cooperation. As Poland develops a modern defense system and builds Europe’s largest army, it relies on proven partners like Norway.
Thank you very much for rising to every challenge and goal we have set together. I also thank you for the presence of Norwegian soldiers, aircraft, and installations in Poland during such challenging times
- said the Polish Prime Minister.
The collaboration between Poland and Norway serves as a model for how European nations and NATO members should work together.
The Role of Poles in Norway
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also emphasized the crucial role of Poles living in Norway.
The most important element of our cooperation is the people, including Poles who live and work in Norway. They form the largest immigrant group in our country
- highlighted the Norwegian Prime Minister.
Donald Tusk expressed his gratitude for the warm treatment of Poles in Norway.
As the Polish Prime Minister, I would like to thank you for your very cordial cooperation and your attitude toward the tens of thousands of Poles who work in Norway
- said Donald Tusk.
The Polish Prime Minister also revealed a personal sentiment for Norway, recalling that he had briefly worked in the country years ago.
