Prime Minister: I want to thank Google for investing with Poland in the most advanced technologies

07.03.2022

Google, one of the leading technology companies, once again increases its involvement in our country. Less than a year ago, Warsaw became a part of the global Google Cloud network. Today, Google is planning further investments in Poland in the total amount of approx. PLN 2.7 billion. The company plans to purchase and further develop the Warsaw HUB office complex. Apart from the investment issue, the meeting also raised the subject of the information war waged by Russia. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that today big companies like Google have an additional responsibility for the words and the veracity of the information they provide.

Google's new investment of approx. PLN 2.7 billion

Google continues to invest in Poland. Last year, the company opened its new office in the Warsaw HUB. Today, Google Poland announced the purchase and further development of this office complex.

"Today, we are increasing our involvement in Poland by investing nearly PLN 2.7 billion in the purchase and further development of the Warsaw HUB office complex, in the heart of the capital city. Already last year, we located and opened our new office in this building – creating a workplace for teams responsible for developing the most advanced Google Cloud solutions used by our customers all over the world," wrote Magdalena Kotlarczyk, the director of Google Poland, in a statement.

During a visit to the Warsaw headquarters of Google Poland, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki thanked the company for investing with Poland in the most advanced technologies: "I am very thankful for Google's long-standing presence in Warsaw, for my multiple conversations with Google's management and for the successful announcement of another major and highly technologically advanced investment today."

Warsaw a part of the global Google Cloud network

This is not the first big investment of Google in Poland. Less than a year ago, in April 2021, Warsaw has become a part of the global Google Cloud network. It was the first investment of this kind in Central and Eastern Europe and, at the same time, the largest Google investment in Poland to date.

The director of Google Poland emphasised that the office in the Polish capital is already the largest office developing Google's cloud computing technologies in Europe: "With the new investment, our Warsaw offices will be able to provide workspace for 2,500 employees, with the potential for further expansion as needed. The investment is also a symbol of our long-term belief in the potential that Poland and the entire region have as an attractive place for the most talented professionals, creating an excellent environment for the development of breakthrough technologies," she stressed.

Responsibility for the words and the veracity of the information provided in time of war in Ukraine

The war waged by Russia consists not only in military action, but also in disinformation. "Today, large companies such as Google have an additional responsibility. This is the responsibility for the words and the veracity of the information provided. This is the responsibility to eliminate fake news and to minimise the impact of Russian propaganda," said the head of the Polish government.

The Prime Minister added that Russian propaganda is what constitutes Putin's additional hidden weapon: "The medium is a message", but today also "The medium is a weapon". That is to say that today information of all kinds – and Google is also a powerful company that manages information and the veracity of that information – today, this medium is being used by rogue states, by Russia, to destroy the sphere of freedom. To limit the chances of coming to the rescue and providing aid to our Ukrainian neighbours.

Conversation between the Polish Prime Minister and the CEO of Google

In recent days, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki participated in a video conference with Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The main topic of conversation was information warfare – especially in the context of the actions taken by the Kremlin. During the conversation, CEO Pichai assured Prime Minister Morawiecki that Google teams are working 24 hours a day in all critical areas – disinformation, cybersecurity, humanitarian affairs and providing access to verified information. Following the decisions of several governments, including Poland, Google has blocked access to some Russian YouTube channels in those countries.

Google will support local organisations helping Ukrainians

As director Magdalena Kotlarczyk emphasises, in the current difficult situation, Google is also focusing on helping Ukraine which has been attacked by Russia: "Last week, we have announced that Google will donate nearly PLN 40 million to local organisations that help people fleeing war in Ukraine to Poland. The funds will be used for direct humanitarian aid and support for refugees in the first weeks after their arrival, as well as to address their long-term needs," she announced in a statement.

In addition, the company will establish a centre where non-governmental organisations will offer legal and psychological assistance to refugees from Ukraine. The centre will be located at the Google for Startups Campus in the Praga district of Warsaw.
