Prime Minister in the Małopolskie Voivodeship. Flooded houses and roads in Głogoczów
19.07.2021
On the night of 17 and 18 July, a violent storm struck, leaving numerous buildings and roads in the Małopolskie Voivodeship flooded. Several bridges were also destroyed. The towns that were struck the most are situated in the Myślenice Commune. Mateusz Morawiecki said that aid would be provided to the victims.
Prime Minister: it was fortunate that no one was hurt
As a result of violent storms combined with a downpour, approx. 104 households in the Małopolskie Voivodeship were flooded. Most of the households are situated in the town of Głogoczów, which was the destination of Mateusz Morawiecki’s visit:
“It is here, in the Myślenice County, that its residents suffered large losses caused by a torrential downpour. It was fortunate that no one was hurt. I would like to say thank you to all the services and those who worked extremely hard to help their neighbours at night. Unfortunately, the Małopolskie Voivodeship is currently affected by a heavy downpour. We, the Voivode and I, want to pay a visit to other places.
The Prime Minister also announced that actions would be taken:
”I can promise you that we will do everything to rectify all resulting losses quickly. We will also provide financial support,” he added. The services had to evacuate 18 people from several houses. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded. Material damage is being estimated.
Flood in Germany and Belgium
”I offered my condolences to Chancellor Angela Merkel and promised her that our services would assist in tackling the flood that had struck Western Germany. Our thoughts are also with the citizens of Belgium and the Poles affected by violent flood events,” emphasised Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
The storms that hit Germany several days ago caused large-scale destruction. According to initial reports, the extreme weather events led to the death of at least 156 people, but the services are worried that the number of fatalities will increase without doubt. The losses are estimated at EUR billions. Many people lost everything that they had spent their lives building up. In Belgium, the storms took the lives of at least 27 people, with a dozen or so people still missing. The disaster caused the largest damage to the eastern and southern part of the country. A national mourning period was announced.
Prime Minister: the services are still on standby
Due to the flood situation and forecasts of further rainfall, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki decided to stay in the Małopolskie Voivodeship until tomorrow. “We are in constant contact with all services that are monitoring the situation in the Małopolskie Voivodeship and also in other voivodeships on an ongoing basis. The services are still on standby,” stressed the head of government during his visit to Lake Dobrzyce. For several hours, the Prime Minister has been visiting the areas affected by the flood, where he has been involved in the ongoing monitoring of actions together with the Voivode or the National Fire Service.
IMGW and RCB warn about further rainstorms
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issues a warning that violent storms may also break on Sunday. A level 3 warning against hailstorms was given for the Małopolskie Voivodeship. Weather forecasters predict a rainfall of 50 to even 100 litres per square metre. A high wind will also be dangerous, reaching the speed of up to 80 km/h and, locally, 100 km/h. The Government Centre for Security (RCB) sent warnings against heavy storms as well.
