Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: I would like to thank the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Mark personally for their pledge of full support in the current situation
21.03.2022
Today, the head of the Polish government discussed with Prime Minister Mark Rutte all possible mechanisms to support people who have fled Ukraine due to the war. The conversation also concerned further sanctions. The barbaric behaviour of the Russian military continues unabated and must therefore be met with a strong European response. At this particular time, it is especially important that we show our unity around support for Ukraine, including sanctions.
War crimes will not go unpunished
The prime ministers stressed their disapproval of Russia's actions, including the attacks on civilians. The head of the Polish government announced that these war crimes are being documented and will not go unpunished. During the meeting, admiration was also expressed for the heroic defence of Ukraine. At the same time, this defence cannot be continued without adequate support from the international community. This support includes the welcoming of our neighbours fleeing the war so that those who remain in their homeland and fight do not have to worry about their loved ones. But it also means defensive weapons.
Freedom and sovereignty wins
Poland wants to give a clear signal to Ukraine, i.e. the rapid achievement of candidate status. This is followed by diplomatic action aimed at partners in Western Europe, encouraging them to take the same step. Ukraine needs this. The head of the Polish government announced that it will be one of the issues he will pursue at the next European summit.
“The Netherlands together with Poland will do everything to make the idea of a free and sovereign Ukraine win," concluded Prime Minister Morawiecki. “To prevent this barbaric force from crushing people's dreams.”
Each subsequent crime will be followed by new sanctions
The head of the Polish government stressed the importance of making Putin aware that each subsequent crime will be followed by further sanctions. “This is what we do and this is what we promise the Kremlin: we will strengthen our position," said Prime Minister Morawiecki.
Among the sanctions discussed by the heads of the Polish and Dutch governments were blockades of European ports and sanctions related to oil and gas. Poland makes every effort to organise the process of sanctioning in the most radical and at the same time united way possible. It is important for Europe to respond with one voice to what is happening in Ukraine.
Support from the Netherlands
The Netherlands supports Ukraine directly: through sanctions and in military terms. Mark Rutte, like the head of the Polish government, also announced further international talks aimed at helping Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. The Netherlands provides direct support for the eastern flank of NATO but also support in terms of adequate funds from the European Union being mobilised for Poland in connection with the reception of war refugees.
The Prime Minister of the Netherlands stressed that Poland plays a leading role in the current situation but is not alone in this. As a member of NATO and as a partner within the European Union, the Netherlands is united with Poland.
