Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: in very many important matters I know that Poland can count on Italy, and Italy can also count on Poland

20.02.2023

A bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of the Italian Republic was held at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The conversation focused in particular on topical issues around support for struggling Ukraine, but also on economic issues. Among others, the challenges facing the European Single Market were discussed. The head of the Polish government stressed that Poland and Italy have many common topics and an identical outlook on the future of the European Union - we care about a strong Europe with strong states.

Defeating Russia today is a condition for returning to normality

The meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was first and foremost an opportunity to discuss further steps in providing support to Ukraine. The topic of Russian aggression and European security is an absolute priority. A victory for Ukraine today is a prerequisite for a return to normality and for ensuring the security of the whole of Europe and, above all, Poland.

“The whole sphere of geopolitics around us is absolutely topic number one, because in order to return to normality, to contain the energy and economic crisis, to stifle inflation, we know perfectly well that we need to defeat Russia, that we need Ukraine to defeat Russia, with the support of the countries of the free world. Italy and Poland are absolutely identical on these issues. We feel a similar responsibility. But we also feel a similar responsibility towards Europe, the development of Europe in the future,” stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

A common vision for Europe and responses to challenges

The head of the Polish government said that in his talks with the Italian Prime Minister, the topic of migration was also raised. Among other things, it was emphasised that the problem of migratory pressure is taken very seriously by our countries - together with Italy, we have similar experience in this area and we agree on the need for long-term, strategic solutions.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also pointed out that Poland and Italy have an identical vision for the future of the European Union. Political proximity is our strength today and it builds the potential for common solutions to the challenges we face as the European Union.

“We want a strong Europe, we want a European Union that is a global player. But it will be a global player when it is a resultant of the forces of interest, and when it takes into account the interests of all the Member States equally. Our meeting is a clear signal of Italian unity, unity with Poland, regarding these internal problems of the European Union and the approach of Poland and Italy to these problems,” concluded Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Poland and Italy can count on each other

The proximity of Poland and Italy is evident above all in economic matters - trade between our countries is flourishing. We want both Polish and Italian entrepreneurs to be able to develop freely in the European market. Italy is today among the top five trading partners of our country. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that the common concern for the European Union's single market is one of the most important issues that unites our countries today.

“Trade, exports, imports - they are developing very well. Together we are supporting Italian business in Poland and Polish business in Italy. We enjoy this exact value of the European Union, thanks to the common European market. This is what motivates us above all and what we care about. That the single European market should continue to benefit Polish and Italian companies, and that competitiveness should not be endangered,” said the head of the Polish government after the meeting with Prime Minister Meloni.
