Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: It Is of Immense Importance That Poland Will Be the Location for Investments That Ensure Security and Influence Technological Development

16.06.2023

Intel, the world’s largest producer of microprocessors, will invest a record-breaking amount of money in a factory near Wrocław. The company will open here the most technologically advanced production facility in this part of Europe. This is the largest foreign investment in Poland’s history. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has been active on the international stage to attract new investments to Poland, including the one announced today. The head of the Polish government visited the site for the factory and met with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger.

Poland – an Excellent Place to Invest

The government supports investment by foreign companies in Poland. As a result, more companies are keen to open their factories here. The American company Intel, a manufacturer of, among other things, processors and server products, will open a cutting-edge semiconductor assembly and test facility.

Semiconductors are of strategic importance in the economy. They are a key component in the construction of electronic devices used in almost every sector of the economy. They are essential for the manufacture of computers, mobile phones, TVs or cars, among others.

“It is hard to imagine the world today without laptops, smartphones, space rockets and modern aircraft – microprocessors and semiconductors play an absolutely fundamental part in all these areas. From this moment on, from this Intel investment, Poland will be a key part of this, not really that extensive, supply system for these top technologies,” noted the head of the Polish government.

Intel has announced that it will invest nearly PLN 20 billion in Poland over 10 years and create up to 2,000 jobs. The new factory will also mean thousands of jobs at the US investor’s subcontractors. Thanks to the groundbreaking investment by this Silicon Valley company, a completely new industrial sector will be created in Poland that will join the group of countries where leading-edge technologies are produced. Intel’s investment will leverage development for the region and for Poland as a whole.

“The Intel facility will employ several thousand people. It is also an opportunity for the development of local companies and universities which will become part of the global chip production ecosystem,” said Minister Janusz Cieszyński who also attended the meeting.

Poland as Part of the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain

The COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted the global economy has also disturbed the smooth supply of semiconductors to the industry. For global companies and economies, it is therefore essential to make the semiconductor supply chain shorter and stronger. Intel’s investment in Poland is therefore of strategic importance. It strengthens the transatlantic strategic partnership, fits in with the new EU policy that sets out the European Chips Act and, as a result, changes the economic map of the world, moving Poland closer to its centre.

“I am very pleased that one of these key links in the production of the most advanced technologies will be anchored right here in Poland. It is indeed extremely important that investments that not only ensure security but also incredibly influence technological development – will be made here in Poland,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki pointed out.

Intel’s investment meets the highest environmental standards to minimise the carbon footprint and has no negative impact on the environment.

New Foreign Investments in Poland

Poland is becoming an increasingly attractive partner for foreign companies every year. Cooperation with international companies is crucial for developing and modernising our economy.

In 2022, trade turnover between Poland and the United States reached a record value of USD 27.3 billion. American companies are among the leading foreign investors in Poland. Foreign investments, such as Intel’s, generate not only new but above all high-quality and high-paying jobs. Poland’s competitive advantage is shifting from low costs to a highly qualified workforce.

“We want to cooperate with everyone, of course. We are particularly happy to cement and consolidate transatlantic cooperation,” stressed the head of the Polish government. He also pointed out that the most advanced production methods and technologies will attract further investors and cooperators like a magnet.

Intel

Intel is one of the forerunners of high technology in Silicon Valley, USA. It has been designing and manufacturing state-of-the-art semiconductor products for more than 50 years. It employs more than 120,000 people worldwide.

Intel has been operating in Poland for 30 years. In Gdańsk, it runs the company’s largest research and development centre in Europe, with almost 4,000 employees.
