Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki meets with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya
04.07.2022
The head of the Polish government met with the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. The main topics of discussion covered the situation in Belarus, the Belarusian government's support for Russia during the conflict in Ukraine, activities of the Belarusian democratic opposition and assistance to civil society.
Resistance of the Belarusian opposition to Russia's aggression in Ukraine
The Belarusian opposition has taken a strong anti-war stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Some Belarusians have actively joined the fight on the side of Ukraine by obstructing the movement of Russian troops within the territory of Belarus.
In May, a representative office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was opened in Kyiv. Among other goals, it aims to solve the problems of the Belarusian diaspora in Ukraine and build Belarusian-Ukrainian trust.
Aggressive rhetoric of the Belarusian regime against Poland
We are concerned about the situation unfolding in Belarus – the increasing militarisation and the risk of the Belarusian army becoming involved in the war. Alexander Lukashenko's regime is carrying out aggressive rhetoric against Poland and continues to oppress its citizens.
We support Belarusian civil society. We are actively involved in coordinating international humanitarian and development aid to the citizens of Belarus. Any possible dialogue with Minsk depends on the release of political prisoners and the implementation of political reforms together with the democratic opposition.
Previous meeting with the Belarusian opposition leader
In September 2020, on the occasion of the ceremony of handing over the keys to the new headquarters of the Belarusian House in Warsaw, the head of the Polish government met with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and the Belarusian diaspora. The discussions held between the Prime Minister and the leader of the Belarusian opposition focused on the situation in Belarus, the release of political prisoners and support for civil society. During the meeting, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki emphasised that Poland supports the Belarusian people and respects the independence of Belarus.
