Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen

23.02.2023

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid a visit to Copenhagen. He met with the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen. During the talks with the head of the Danish government, key bilateral issues were addressed: energy cooperation and issues related to European security and support for Ukraine. In addition, selected topics from the EU agenda were discussed.

Poland and Denmark together against Russian imperialism

Poland and Denmark know how important it is to continue supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. In our discussions with leaders of other countries, we emphasise that the security and stability of our region depends on the victory of the Ukrainians. Peace can only be restored by supporting Ukraine and forcing Russia to respect its independence and sovereignty.

- “I am very grateful to the Prime Minister, for her declaration, words and deeds in the area of support for Ukraine, the stabilisation of the international situation, as well as the decision to transfer CAESAR howitzers to Ukraine”, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed, thanking Denmark for its commitment.

In January 2023, the Danish government decided to donate all its modern CAESAR howitzers to the Ukrainian army.

Poland has clearly sided with Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian aggression on 24 February 2022. Our huge contribution to humanitarian and military aid puts us at the forefront of countries that have continuously offered their support.

We are also among the first to donate Leopard 2 tanks and train Ukrainian soldiers. Poland also stresses the importance of helping Ukraine internationally and supports Ukraine's path to the European Union and NATO.

Energy cooperation with Denmark

Poland and Denmark are strategic partners - particularly in terms of energy cooperation. In September 2022, we launched the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline. This investment, developed by Poland in cooperation with Denmark and Norway, is today our key to achieving energy independence from Russia. The Baltic Pipe pipeline provides a secure gas supply for Poland and our neighbouring countries.

We are looking for further opportunities to develop cooperation in this area between our countries.

- We are at such a special historical moment, so we touch on many other important topics - migration, renewable energy sources. Here we also agree on so many issues," added the head of the Polish government.

European agenda for the European Council meeting in March

The meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was also an opportunity for an initial exchange of views on topics to be discussed at the European forum. The issues raised included, in particular, the imposition of sanctions on Russia and the reconstruction of Ukraine.

- “We support the seizure of assets of the Russian Federation and Russian oligarchs. We also discussed this topic briefly, as Russia cannot be allowed to escape responsibility for any damage - including material damage caused by it”, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed.

In parallel, the head of the Polish government discussed migration and the need to tighten the EU's external border protection system. Poland and Denmark have a similar outlook on this issue.

Poland's intensive work on the international stage

We are continuing our diplomatic efforts and talks with partners in many regions. We carry the message that today the common goal of all free countries is to ensure the security of Europe by supporting Ukraine. Our neighbours are fighting the Russian invaders for not only their, but also our freedom. The future of all of Europe - including Poland - depends on their victory.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has recently held talks with, among others, the US President, the Chair of the European Commission, the President of Hungary, the Prime Ministers of the UK, Italy, the Czech Republic, Sweden, the German Chancellor and many other leaders.
