Poland and the Czech Republic will also jointly apply to the European Commission for new EU funds to support refugees from Ukraine.
Prime Ministers of Poland and the Czech Republic on security and the situation in Ukraine
The Prime Ministers’ talks concerned security and defence as part of the EU and NATO and the current situation in Ukraine. In this context, the PMs discussed the opportunities for further support for fighting Ukraine, aid for refugees and sanctions against Russia.
“We also agreed on a joint application to the European Commission to raise new funds to support war refugees,” PM Mateusz Morawiecki informed. “We will soon present our initiative together,” he explained.

The meeting also touched on issues of bilateral relations and economic cooperation. “Poland will cooperate with the Czech Republic to work out appropriate mechanisms to help the country go through the difficult period of becoming energy independent from Russia,” said the Polish PM.
With the upcoming Czech presidency of the Council of the EU, the talks also covered the European Union’s agenda. “I am convinced that together with our friends from the Czech Republic, we will be able to shape the EU agenda so that it corresponds to today’s priorities and challenges,” PM Mateusz Morawiecki noted.
Poland advocates tough sanctions against Russia
Since the beginning of the brutal aggression against Ukraine, Poland has stressed the need to impose firm and severe sanctions on Russia. Furthermore, we advocate for the entire European Union to give up importing Russian raw materials to stop Putin’s war machine.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki regularly meets politicians from around the world and calls for support for our eastern neighbours. Only joint action can stop further Russian aggression.
Poland supports Ukraine
Even before the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Poland had taken measures to prepare for a possible refugee crisis. As a result, we were very quickly able to organise assistance for people fleeing the war in Ukraine. To date, more than three million refugees have already entered Poland.
The current refugee crisis is the largest population exodus in Europe since the end of World War II. Poland is taking action to ensure that the European Union and the entire Western world take joint responsibility for the situation of people who have had to flee their country due to the Russian invasion. Humanitarian aid and support for the countries hosting the largest number of refugees are needed. It is also vital for the Community to become more involved in welcoming people fleeing the war.
