Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki speaks with the Prime Minister of Australia
04.09.2021
On 4 September, the Head of the Polish Government has once again talked over the phone with Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison. The main topic of conversation was cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic. In August, Poland provided Australia with 1 million vaccines, which were given, among others, to residents of Sydney. The call was also an opportunity to discuss the current international situation. Next year, our countries will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.
Poland supports Australia in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Poland has lent Australia a helping hand. The Government of that country asked us to resell some of our vaccines due to shortage of doses.
Our country’s problems with availability of COVID-19 vaccines are over, which is why the Polish Government decided to support Australia by reselling vaccines with a shorter expiration date at the purchase price. Prime Minister Morrison has thanked us for providing the vaccines.
Poland was the only EU country to resell vaccines to Australia recently. Of 5.5 acquired vaccine doses, 4 million came from the United Kingdom, 1 million from Poland and 0.5 million from Singapore.
International situation
The Prime Ministers expressed their concern about the dynamically changing situation in terms of security in Afghanistan. They agreed on the need for close bilateral and multilateral cooperation, monitoring of the developments in the region and support for Afghans who left their country in recent weeks.
50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations
Poland and Australia, despite the great distance between them, have had good bilateral relations for years. In 2022, we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Morrison expressed his hope that the Governor-General of Australia David Hurley will be able to visit Poland on this occasion.
Our country supports its partners, even in difficult moments. We have already proven this in previous years, when the Polish Government proposed to send firefighters to support Australia, which at the time was struggling with fires. The initiative of the Polish firefighters led to a fundraiser whose proceeds went towards reconstruction of the Kosciuszko National Park in Australia.
