Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki takes part in videoconference on Belarus border crisis with heads of Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian governments
21.08.2021
The situation on the border with Belarus was the main topic of PM Morawiecki’s talks with the heads of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian governments. The videoconference concerned the border crisis caused by Belarus and related to the influx of migrants into Europe.
The Prime Ministers exchanged information on the border situation, as well as the actions being conducted to address it. They all agreed that Poland’s ongoing cooperation with the Baltic states is proceeding smoothly. The actions taken to protect the borders with Belarus have had a positive effect in recent weeks. There has been a significant decrease in the number of incidents related to attempted illegal border crossings.
Joint action to provide information on situation at Belarus border
The heads of governments have agreed that there is a need for joint action to precisely inform both the public and international partners about the situation at the border. Providing genuine information on the border situation and actions taken by Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian services will be of utmost importance. Such communication is to involve human rights organisations, NGOs, the United Nations and the European Union. Disinformation is part of the hybrid warfare activities carried out by Belarus. The Belarusian regime makes accusations of “inhumane treatment of refugees at the border”. The EU’s external border with Belarus features no such thing as a “no man's land”, with no particular country being responsible for the people present in it. In reality, the territory in question is part of Belarus and it is Belarusian authorities that bear full responsibility for the situation of foreign nationals that they have legally admitted to their territory.
Destabilisation of EU border – deliberate actions by Belarusian regime
The heads of governments of Poland and the Baltic states have dubbed the increase in illegal migration from Belarus to be actions destabilising the situation on the border, which are being carried out by Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.
All European Union Member States have the duty to protect the border and prevent illegal crossing attempts. It must be emphasized that individuals who have actually crossed the border have been transferred to special centres where they have received help. The Prime Ministers of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will adopt a joint statement on this matter.
