Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: We are restoring railroad connections
26.09.2021
We focus on railroad – the most ecological means of transport. Therefore, we have already modernised almost 5,500 km of railroad lines and 225 railroad stations. Thanks to this, Poles can, for example, get to work or back home faster. We also restore rail connections that were once closed. This includes, among other things, the modernisation of the Mielec-Dębica line. Thanks to that, after a 12-year break, the railroad connection between Mielec and Debica was restored.
"The legacy left to us by our predecessors was an infrastructure deficit, or a great lag in development. Closed bus lines, shut down railroads and closed stations. Today, we are rebuilding and reconstructing all these failings," - emphasised Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at the train station in Mielec. As he added, a map of train and bus connections that were closed under previous governments will soon be shown.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki noted that the government is investing in infrastructure so that Poles can live in their small homelands. "Our primary duty is to rebuild opportunities in places like Mielec or Debica and in all the towns that were abandoned during the Third Republic," - said the head of the government. "Today, we are not only restoring railroad connections, we are also restoring normality and hope" he added.
Investing in railroads
Railroad investments serve all Poles and help our economy recover from the crisis caused by COVID-19. So far, we have already modernised 5444 km of railroad lines and 225 railroad stations.
We also care for the comfort of travellers. So far, we have built 61 new train stations and modernised 307 existing ones. We have also put 40 new and modernised PKP stations into operation. We continue to increase funds for railroads. This year, we plan to allocate additional PLN 6.4 billion for this purpose.
Railroad investments are based on three pillars: investments in railroad lines along with stations and stops, investments in railroad stations and investments in rolling stock. In a long-term perspective, we will allocate over PLN 100 billion for these investments.
The programmes that enable the complete makeover of Polish railroads are:
- National Railway Programme,
- Railway Station Investment Programme;
- Rolling Stock Strategy.
These programmes are complemented by the Railway+ programme, under which we work with local authorities on the construction and reconstruction of railroad lines to Polish cities and towns. It is also the Railway Station Programme, whose originator is President Andrzej Duda, within the framework of which rail stations are rebuilt and built all over the country – in places where access to railroads is insufficient.
Modernisation of railroad line No. 25 Padew Narodowa - Mielec - Dębica
After a 12-year break, the Mielec-Dębica connection has been restored thanks to the modernisation of railroad line No. 25 Padew Narodowa - Mielec - Debica. The investment is carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. Although the modernisation of line No. 25 is still underway, trains will now run permanently on the Mielec-Dębica route. The official opening ceremony took place at the PKP station in Mielec on 1 September 2021. The modernisation is divided into 2 stages: Mielec - Debica and Mielec - Padew Narodowa.
The assumed total value of the project will amount to over PLN 400 million, including a subsidy of PLN 344 million from the European Union budget under the Regional Operational Programme for the Podkarpackie Voivodeship 2014-2020.
