A summit between the leaders of the European Union and the leaders of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-CELAC) took place in Brussels. The main topics discussed with the leaders of the South and Central American countries were agriculture, trade and international stability. The head of the Polish government also met directly with the presidents of Argentina and Colombia. Poland is particularly keen to look after the interests of Polish farmers and entrepreneurs in its relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The interests of Polish farmers are paramount
The meeting of European Union leaders with leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean provided an opportunity for plenary talks, as well as bilateral meetings and unofficial discussions. One of the key topics was trade in agricultural products and foodstuffs. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki presented the interests of Polish farmers and entrepreneurs. He stressed that Poland will oversee compliance with the rules in international trade and that Polish exporters must be treated fairly and have a level playing field.
“The trade agreement between the European Union and Latin American countries still requires a lot of work. We will certainly focus very strongly on making Polish farmers and the Polish agricultural sector come out winners here, and not losers,” said the head of the Polish government. “From our perspective, it is extremely important that the trading conditions are equal, in order to protect, first and foremost, Polish agriculture and Polish agricultural processors. I have also made this point very strongly during several of my speeches here,” he added.
The Latin American and Caribbean region, which has a population of more than 655 million, is an attractive economic partner for Poland and provides opportunities to diversify our markets.
Polish industry benefits from international trade
Today, Poland offers favourable conditions for the development of Polish companies. Lower taxes, good infrastructure and foreign investment are just a few of the pillars that support the dynamic expansion of Polish entrepreneurs. We can see that our domestic companies are increasingly present on international markets and engage in trade all over the globe.
“More and more companies are exporting to Latin American countries – this is a great success for Polish entrepreneurs. We are very happy about this. Here, too, the Polish Investment and Trade Agency is helping, export credits are helping, the Polish Development Fund is helping. We will support Polish exports and the expansion of Polish capital, Polish entrepreneurs to Latin America,” stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
The strong position of Polish companies is a great opportunity for the further development of our economy. The head of the Polish government noted that we also have many common interests with Latin America in the field of mineral resources. Poland has important investments in Latin America, through which we have access to these resources. They are later used by Polish industry to process and export Polish products around the world.
Multilateral diplomacy and global politics
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also spoke to leaders of Latin American and Caribbean countries about Russian policy and the global threats and consequences it entails. In the talks, the head of the Polish government stressed that Russia is currently pursuing an aggressive colonialist and imperialist policy. He also noted that we can never consent to the violation of international law, and those who violate it should be excluded from the international community – which is what is happening in the case of the Russian Federation.
“Within the UN, we need to build a coalition of peace-loving countries that want to return to stability, to normality, to peace. This will only be possible if we stop Russia's aggressive policy,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after the Brussels summit.
