Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: women's time is coming
15.05.2023
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took part in the “Women have a choice” conference. The event was an opportunity to discuss the role of Polish women in economic, social and business life. The situation of women on the labour market is improving. More and more Polish women are choosing to take up employment or run their own businesses. Data shows an increase in the proportion of women in managerial positions. In addition, we are among the top OECD countries with the lowest wage gap, i.e. the difference between men's and women's earnings. At the same time, Polish women can utilise various forms of government support to help them return to the labour market.
Government support for women
Polish women can benefit from various government programmes. Thanks to them, as stated in the title of the conference, women have a choice. They can decide whether they want to return to work or look after their child after birth. We allocate funds for the expansion of nurseries and their operation. As a result, there are more places for children up to the age of 3 in the municipalities, and the municipalities are able to accept the youngest to their facilities. This allows Polish women to return to work sooner, without significant expenses from the household budget.
- Maluch+ – thanks to the implementation of this programme, there are more childcare facilities for children up to the age of 3. This allows women to return to work sooner;
- Family 500+ – additional financial support for Polish families. It allows parents to buy clothes, school supplies or toys for their child;
- Family Care Capital – available to families for the second and each subsequent child aged from 12 to 35 months. This makes it easier for parents to cope with increased expenses;
- Good Start – an annual, one-off support for students who are starting the school year. It allows parents to buy their child books, school supplies or learning aids;
- Mama+ – the programme supports people who have raised at least four children and who have therefore not entered the labour market.
"Indeed, 7-8 years ago at the beginning of our government, there were just over 80,000 places in nurseries. Now it's 230,000, which is about 3 times more," said the head of government.
The socio-economic situation of Polish women
During the event, the results of two latest reports prepared by the Generations Institute and the Polish Economic Institute were presented. The research shows that the situation of women in terms of many economic indicators is getting increasingly better.
"I have looked at the data that has been presented here and it tells me one thing, it tell me that women’s time is coming. I am convinced that this will be a very good time for Poland," stressed the Prime Minister.
Women in the labour market
Over the past seven years, the growth rate of the presence of professionally active women, relative to the working-age population in Poland, has been significantly higher than the EU average. Additionally, in 2022, the proportion of women who were operating their own business in the total employed population was 13.1%. For comparison, in Germany the rate was 5.6% and in France it was 9.3%. In Poland, we have a lot of women in managerial positions. In Q4 2022, there were 42.5% of them.
"There has been a considerable increase in the participation of women in the labour market, a very strong increase to above 60 per cent. And last year a record 7.4 million women have been integrated into the labour market," said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
