Prime Minister: Zgierz is the lens in which Polish Deal programmes focus
10.07.2021
The Zgierz Sports and Leisure Centre is among the largest sports investments in Poland. Zgierz inhabitants will have a state-of-the-art centre to engage in physical activity. Locally, Zgierz is also the place of a large transport modernisation, which involves new roads, stations, and a tram line. The Polish Deal covers modernisations to communes and counties across Poland.
“Zgierz is the lens in which Polish Deal programmes focus – infrastructural projects, improvements to road and railway infrastructure, but also projects aimed to make medium-sized towns beautiful. They will attract new inhabitants. No one will want to leave them,” pointed out Mateusz Morawiecki, the head of government.
The largest sports centre in the Łódzkie Voivodeship
The modernisation to the sports facility in Zgierz began with works valued only at PLN 2 million. The involvement of local politicians and the government led to the acquisition of more resources and made the modernisation to the entire facility possible. The town will see the construction of an extensive sports centre, which will include a multi-purpose sports arena. The arena is planned to be used as an all-year ice rink. The full-size football pitch with artificial grass will also be modernised and surrounded by an air dome. All of these investments will cost the state budget approx. PLN 25 million. The centre will be used by all town and county inhabitants as well as by visiting sportspeople.
”We are here in this sports beauty – Zgierz Sports and Leisure Centre – that is becoming one of the largest sports centre in the Łódzkie Voivodeship,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. “Something incredible is happening here, in Zgierz. We are witnessing the construction of a large multi-purpose facility. It will attract large sports events,” he added.
New arena for volleyball, futsal, and handball
At first, a multi-purpose arena was built. It was opened in December 2020 already. It is currently possible to play handball, volleyball, basketball, or futsal there. The new arena also features stands that can seat a large number of fans. The arena can now be compared with European sports arenas.
Large hall – all-year ice rink
The old arena has been modernised since 2016. The modernisation cost lots of PLN millions. It has as many as ten modern locker rooms. The stands at the old hall can seat numerous fans of, for example, hockey or figure skating. The arena will be opened at the turn of 2021 and 2022. It will be converted into an all-year ice rink.
Air dome – full-size football pitch with artificial grass
The construction of a modern full-size football pitch surrounded by an air dome will start soon. It will have artificial grass and will be able to be used all year round, even in winter. It is one of the most important investments in the Łódzkie Voivodeship. It will be the first arena surrounded by an air dome in the Łódzkie Voivodeship. The Polish Deal will make it possible to build state-of-the-art sports facilities all over Poland.
Transport modernisation in Zgierz
The town of Zgierz is located near the city of Łódź. Many Zgierz inhabitants go to work or school to the capital city of the Łódzkie Voivodeship. A one-lane road plagued by traffic jams connects them. The best investment that improved transport between the town and the city was the tram.
“It takes a lot of time for both cities’ inhabitants to get to each other using a one-way road. The tram will make transport much easier,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, adding that ”the entire transport infrastructure in Zgierz is being modernised. The four flyovers there even remember the times of Marshal Piłsudski. They are now being modernised. This will improve transport in Zgierz, but also be crucial in terms of development and economic prospects.”
The idea of the government and behind the Polish Deal is to limit the necessity for inhabitants of towns to travel to cities. Better transport and higher quality of life in towns are our objectives for the years to come.
Houses of Weavers in Zgierz
They make up one of the most beautiful and historic districts of the town of Zgierz. In the 19th century, it was an absolute gem of the epoch. To preserve that Europe-unique urban layout, the Town of Weavers Culture Park was established there. It covers approx. 30 remaining houses of former weavers. These historic houses are now used by various institutions and associations, offering a one-of-a-kind place of recreation to Zgierz inhabitants and tourists alike.
”We have acquired approx. PLN 15 million for the renovation of the Houses of Weavers. The investment will bring the beauty and history of Zgierz to light, while attracting people there,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
It is without doubt that the renovation of historic places and the modernisation of transport infrastructure create a more attractive environment for investment in Zgierz. The town is located near expressways S12 and S8 and motorways A1 and A2. Many logistics centres are being built around Zgierz, attracting new investors. This means new jobs and higher wages for local workers.
"This is an example of the investment part of the Polish Deal in action. This shows what drives productivity the most – a new framework for economic growth. The creation of new jobs is at the heart of the Polish Deal,” emphasised Mateusz Morawiecki, the head of government.
