Rebuilding the Weimar Triangle – Prime Minister Donald Tusk visiting Paris and Berlin
12.02.2024
The visit to Paris and Berlin marks the initial step in rebuilding positive relations and reaffirming Poland's significance in the international arena. Collaboration within the Weimar Triangle holds particular significance from a security standpoint. Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke with Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz on key issues for the future of Europe.
The need for the EU unity
The words that epitomize the concept of solidarity - 'one for all, all for one' – form the foundation of modern Europe's philosophy and represent the paramount value of contemporary Poland. This necessitates resolute action on behalf of the European community, particularly in light of prevailing threats – stated the head of the Polish government in Paris.
The Prime Minister emphasized that security encompasses multiple dimensions, including providing direct support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, rebuilding a robust military force for Europe as a whole, and establishing a unified energy policy and ensuring food security.
History will not forgive us if we fail to construct a Europe of solidarity and unity today. I am convinced that we have all learned the lessons of history appropriately and sufficiently – stressed Donald Tusk.
Paris also hosted a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Poland, France and Germany to give new impetus to the Weimar Triangle. The Polish government was represented by Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
Europe as a military power
The European Union's economy is eight times larger than that of Russia. We have 6 times the population of Russia. There is no reason for us to be militarily weaker than Russia. Hence, enhancing production and deepening cooperation are unquestionably top priorities – argued the head of the Polish government.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk also announced enhanced defense cooperation for the air defense to bolster defense capabilities in the short term. Europe should also expand its ammunition production capacity.
We will earn respect in all capitals of the world if we firmly believe that the European Union can wield power not only in civilization, economy, and science, but also as a military force – asserted the Prime Minister.
Cooperation for the benefit of European farmers
The head of the Polish government stated his intention to advocate for increased flexibility regarding the Green Deal and the importation of food products from Ukraine. Previously, issues arising in agricultural markets were primarily felt in countries directly bordering Ukraine, notably in Poland. Today, the repercussions of excessive imports also impact farmers from other European Union countries.
We will find a solution that respects Ukraine's interests and aligns with our ambitions for climate protection, while simultaneously effectively safeguarding European farmers – assured the head of the Polish government.
Paris was the third capital visited by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, followed by Berlin as the fourth. Earlier, he made visits to Brussels and Kiev.
