25.06.2024

During today’s consultations, the two ministers discussed the most important issues of common interest for Poland and Sweden, namely security in the Baltic Sea region, measures to help Ukraine in the face of the Russian aggression, and support for the European aspirations of Moldova and Ukraine.

The talks contributed to an intensified bilateral dialogue developed with a view to deepening the Polish-Swedish relations.

The two countries’ top diplomats discussed matters related to the current international situation, including military, economic, and political aid for Ukraine as well as the plans to rebuild the latter country and to support its Euro-Atlantic aspirations. They agreed that continued tightening of the sanctions regime targeting Russia and Belarus should be an important aspect of Poland’s and Sweden’s common aims.

The agenda of today’s consultations included the matters of security in the Baltic Sea region, hybrid threats and countering disinformation, and defence cooperation, including within NATO, where Sweden is the most recent member. The meeting was also an opportunity to share views on the priorities of Poland and Sweden in the context of this July’s NATO Summit in Washington, D.C.

The ministers talked about the future of the Eastern Partnership, launched on the initiative of Poland and Sweden 15 years ago. Minister Sikorski and Minister Billström agreed that its role needs to be redefined in the face of geopolitical changes.

Discussing cooperation with China, the two top diplomats stressed that country’s part in the process of ending Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
