Appointment of Deputy Directors at the PIM MSWiA

On Tuesday (March 26th) Marcin Kierwiński, Minister of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA), appointed Mariusz Kowalewski MD PhD Assoc. Prof., and Konstanty Szułdrzyński MD PhD as Deputy Directors of the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (PIM MSWiA). Deputy Minister Wiesław Szczepański presented the appointment letters.
Associate Professor Mariusz Kowalewski MD PhD has been appointed as Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs, while Konstanty Szułdrzyński assumes the role of Deputy Director for Medical Affairs at the PIM MSWiA, effective March 26th, 2024.
It's worth mentioning that earlier, on March 8th of this year, Minister Marcin Kierwiński appointed Professor Piotr Suwalski MD PhD to the position of Director of the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration.
Mariusz Kowalewski MD PhD, Associate Professor of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, has been appointed Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs at the PIM MSWiA.
Mariusz Kowalewski MD PhD Assoc. Prof. is a cardiac surgeon with a longstanding association with the PIM MSWiA. He began working at the Clinical Department of Cardiac Surgery of the then Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (CSK MSWiA) in 2018. Since 2021, he has served as a senior assistant at the Clinical Department of Cardiac Surgery and Transplantation of the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (PIM MSWiA).
Professor Mariusz Kowalewski earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the Collegium Medicum of the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Bydgoszcz. He obtained his doctorate in medical sciences from the UMK Collegium Medicum and his PhD from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. He was habilitated in the field of medical sciences in April 2022.
Currently, Professor Kowalewski lectures at the Faculty of Medicine of the UMK Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, as well as at the Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti Ismett Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico in Palermo, Italy, and at the Maastricht University.
Before his appointment as Deputy Director at the PIM MSWiA, Professor Kowalewski also served as the director of the Scientific Research Center for Thoracic Diseases - Thoracic Research Center, Collegium Medicum UMK in Bydgoszcz. He has authored over 150 research papers published in prestigious medical journals.
Konstanty Szułdrzyński MD PhD has been appointed Deputy Director for Medical Affairs at the PIM MSWiA
Konstanty Szułdrzyński MD PhD graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University - Collegium Medicum (UJ CM) in 1999. He completed his specialization in internal medicine in 2007 and earned his doctorate in medical sciences with honors in 2009. In 2015, he obtained the title of specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care.
Doctor Konstanty Szułdrzyński has been associated with the Department of Anatomy at the UJ CM for many years. He initiated, developed, and managed the Center for Extracorporeal Therapies at the University Hospital in Cracow. From 2000 to 2020, he worked in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the University Hospital in Cracow, serving as its head from 2018 to 2019.
He has held various positions, including membership in the Council of the Medical Research Agency and participation in the COVID-19 pandemic working team at the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tarification. He was also a member of the Prime Minister's Medical Council for COVID-19, resigning along with 12 other advisors.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Director for Medical Affairs at the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (PIM MSWiA), Doctor Szułdrzyński served as the head of the Clinical Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the PIM MSWiA.
He is actively involved in scientific societies and research projects, holding positions such as a member of the main board of EuroELSO, president of the main board of the Society for the Support of Intensive Care (POLCRIT), and secretary of the main board of the Central European organization, SepsEast. He is also a member of European Society for Intensive Care (ESICM) - section of acute respiratory failure, and the consortium IntelliLung, the EU Horizon grant.
Dr. Konstanty Szułdrzyński MD PhD has authored numerous publications on respiratory failure, mechanical lung ventilation, and extracorporeal gas exchange support techniques.
