Minister Zbigniew Rau visits Paris

The meeting of foreign ministers of the Weimar Triangle and Polish-French bilateral consultations were the key points of Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau’s visit in Paris. Consultations of top diplomats of the Weimar Triangle member states were the first held in this format since 2016.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed dynamic developments in the EU neighbourhood, particularly in the context of the current events in Belarus, EU-Russia relations and the future strengthening of the Eastern Partnership. The ministers also talked about the situation in the eastern part of the Mediterranean and in Libya. The agenda also included trans-Atlantic cooperation, security issues, EU-China relations and the strategy for the Indo-Pacific.

The chiefs of Polish, French and German diplomacies presented their national strategies to counter spreading of the COVID-19 pandemic, and discussed the migration issues and managing of the EU member states’ borders.

During his visit in Paris, Minister Zbigniew Rau also met with the head of French diplomacy Jean-Yves Le Drian. They used the opportunity to discuss current bilateral relations in relation with President Emmanuel Macron’s visit in Warsaw in February 2020. The ministers also talked about sectoral cooperation provided for in the Polish-French Cooperation Programme for 2020-2023 and its planned development in the nearest future. Special attention was paid to furthering bilateral economic cooperation.

Moreover, the ministers also discussed security policy issues, both bilateral and in the framework of the EU and NATO.

On 15 October 2020, a joint statement was signed by the Weimar Triangle ministers of foreign affairs of France, Germany and Poland – Jean-Yves Le Drian, Heiko Maas and Zbigniew Rau – reaffirming the European Union's vocation to act and promote peace, security, democracy and human rights and to protect the values on which it is founded, as well as its own interests.
