About GIOŚ
The Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (GIOŚ) is an office of government administration responsible, in particular, for the control of entities using the environment in terms of compliance with environmental protection regulations and the conduct of state environmental monitoring and laboratory activities. The tasks of the Environmental Protection Inspectorate also include the prosecution of crimes against the environment specified in the Criminal Code and offences specified in the Code of Petty Offences and a number of laws on environmental protection.
In fulfilling its tasks, the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection co-operates, among others, with other inspection bodies, law enforcement and justice bodies, other state administration bodies and bodies of local self-government.
The bodies of the Environmental Protection Inspectorate include: the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection and 16 voivodeship inspectors of environmental protection who are organs of combined government administration in the voivodeship.
The work of the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection is supervised by the minister responsible for climate issues.
The Authority was established under the Environmental Protection Inspection Act of 20 July 1991.
