04.12.2023

On December 4, 2023 the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria organized a Christmas concert performed by the outstanding South African ensemble "Charl du Plessis Trio". The concert was intended to commemorate the 105th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence, as well as to celebrate Foreign Service Day. The event was attended by representatives of South African government institutions, the diplomatic corps, the press, think-tanks, academic, business and artistic circles, as well as Polish diaspora.

Concert to mark the 105 anniversary of regaining the Independence

The commemorative speech was delivered by Ambassador Adam Burakowski, who in his speech introduced the audience to the importance of Poland regaining independence in 1918 and also referred to current political events.

The concert featured the very popular South African trio "The Charl du Plessis Trio", performing crossover music that combines well-known classical music with jazz. The band consists of Charl du Plessis (Steinway pianist), Peter Auret (drums) and Werner Spies (bass). The band, which was founded in 2006, regularly performs in Europe and Asia. The artists have recorded 10 albums together, won four SAMA awards (South African Grammy Awards) and often perform at jazz and classical festivals in South Africa.

Within the framework of the event, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria presented also an exhibition about the life and work of our great composer, Fryderyk Chopin, prepared by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The concert aroused great interest and attracted many spectators, and the wonderful performance of the South African musicians will remain in our memory for a long time.
