Mozambique

Diplomatic relations between Poland and Mozambique were established on 25 June 1975.

Political cooperation

Poland established diplomatic relations with Mozambique on 25 June 1975, on the day Mozambique proclaimed its independence.  Until 1978, the Ambassador of the Polish People's Republic in Tanzania, based in Dar es Salaam, was accredited to Mozambique. In the period of 1978-1990, the Embassy of the Polish People's Republic operated in Maputo, at the level of chargé d'affaires, but consular services for Mozambique were performed by the Consular Department of the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam. At present, Mozambique is in the territorial competence of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria. The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Maputo, run by honorary consul Alberto Mabjaia, operates in the capital city. In the 1980s, bilateral cooperation between Poland and Mozambique was successful, which resulted from the fact that both countries belonged to the Eastern bloc. After democratic changes in both countries,  the number of mutual visits decreased significantly. The most important event include the visit of the Minister of Construction of the Republic of Poland, B. Blida to Mozambique on 20 – 21 March 1996.

Economic cooperation

From December 2007, the mutual economic relations between Poland and Mozambique was regulated by the Interim Economic Partnership Agreement. No economic bilateral agreements between Poland – Mozambique has been signed so far. Mozambique, as one of the six members of the South African Development Community (SADC), signed the "Economic Partnership Agreement" (EPA) with the EU on 10 June 2016.  Poland's trade turnover with Mozambique amounted to USD 155.3 million in 2017.  Trade turnover between Poland and Mozambique is increasing systematically from year to year.  Assortment fluctuations in trade relations with Mozambique clearly indicate the ad hoc nature of transactions. One of the worth mentioning event in the economic relations between both countries was the economic mission of the Polish  Chamber of Commerce to Mozambique held in September 2015, whose aim was to test the possibility of establishing business cooperation with enterprises in this country.
