European Film Festival 2022 in Zimbabwe
02.11.2022
The European Film Festival in Zimbabwe, initiated by the EU Delegation in Zimbabwe and its Member States in 2016, has become one of the leading film industry events in Zimbabwe. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria took part in this event for the first time.
The festival took place in two cities in Zimbabwe: in Bulawayo on October 20-23, 2022 and Harare on October 27-30, 2022. Embassies and Cultural Institutes of Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Sweden participated in the festival. Poland presented the war drama "303 Squadron". The film is a true story of Polish aces of the skies. Polish airmen, initially underestimated and ridiculed, have become a legend. As part of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain, they created an elite unit. Before the screening of the Polish film, an occasional speech was given by Dr Krystyna Grabowska, Polish Honorary Consul in Zimbabwe.
The organizers of the event presented 11 latest films awarded at international festivals. The festival offers the opportunity to get acquainted with the diverse works of European and African cinema. Over the years, the event has grown considerably and since the screening of European films, it has turned into a full-blown film festival. Thanks to the program to stimulate the development of the local film industry, the festival has made it possible to engage and educate Zimbabwean filmmakers on an international level. In addition to a weekly screening program, the festival offers a masterclass, a short film competition and a conference attended by local and global industry professionals. The film festival arouses great interest in Zimbabwe, and viewers have a chance to see the rich, but rarely presented in Zimbabwe, works of European cinema.
