In conversation with Dariusz Popiela and premiere of the film "Edge of light" in South Africa

24.11.2024

A documental film "Edge of light" directed by Wojciech Szumowski was presented for the first time in South Africa. The film tells the story of the Olympian and world championship medallist Dariusz Popiela, who, together with a group of young Polish students, works to rebuild old, forgotten Jewish cemeteries in order to commemorate the memory of those murdered in the Holocaust.

Combining personal and collective narratives, the film shows the selfless efforts of these young people, who question the stereotype of Jewish-Polish antagonism, drawing attention to the memory of Polish Jewry.

After the screening, meetings were held with the protagonist of the film and the initiator of the campaign "People not numbers", Dariusz Popiela, who gave a lecture on the project and answered, often difficult, questions from the audience. The events aroused great interest among the numerous spectators who thanked for organizing such a project.

The events were organized by the Holocaust and Genocide Centres in Johannesburg on 20.11.2024, Durban on 21.11.2024 and Cape Town on 24.11.2024 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria.
