The MFA organised a series of expert panels and an information and promotional campaign under the slogan “UN Week” to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Organisation.

In his lifetime, John Paul II was often reproached for having his eyes fixed on the past, for not understanding the present and for not keeping up with the world. Admittedly, his role in the communism overthrowing was widely recognised, but it was also believed that he was unable to find his place in the world of democracy and pluralism, in the global market of ideas where the Catholic Church must seek attention of people on an equal footing with others.

The Polish School in Pretoria, together with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria, joined this year's edition of the National Reading campaign. Students of the Polish School in Pretoria, teachers, parents and representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria took part in this noble event for the fifth time, this year, reading Juliusz Słowacki's "Balladyna" by roles. The introductory word was delivered by Klara Dąbrowska, the consul of the Republic of Poland, and Magdalena Górna, the teacher of the Polish School in Pretoria. The entire event was chaired by Lidia Moń, head of the Polish School in Pretoria.

The Warsaw Flights Organizing Committee in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria has once again organized a celebration commemorating the heroic " Warsaw Flights" of the South African Air Force and Allied airmen who participated in a military mission aimed at supporting of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The commemoration of the 76th anniversary of the "Warsaw Flights" took place on September 5, 2020 in Johannesburg.

On 31 August, we solemnly celebrate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements and the establishment of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity”, which contributed to the collapse of communism and an end to the world’s cold war division.

Forty years ago, during the hot summer months of 1980, Europe was totally different from its today’s image. The continent had been divided by the Iron Curtain, which wasn’t only a metaphorical line of political division. Indeed, the line was dividing free and democratic countries and those deprived of their sovereignty and totally dependent on the Soviet empire. One of the countries who had been left after the war under the dependence of the communist power, was my homeland – Poland. Poland, who during the war lost about 6 millions of citizens, the half of them being the citizens with Jewish origins. It was a disaster after which it was unlikely that we could rise up.

On 15 August 2020 we solemnly celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw – a culminating point of the Polish-Soviet War (1919-1920) and one of the most decisive events in the history of Poland, Europe, and the world.

The Polish-Bolshevik war was a founding moment for modern Poland and a crucial moment for the entire Europe, even though the awareness of this may be insufficient. It was the real clashing point of two diverse civilizations. Poland’s political elite passed the test of maturity at the most critical moment.
