The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria, in cooperation with the European Union Delegation in Pretoria, organised on 2 December 2024 a meeting at the University of Pretoria on the subject of Poland taking over the EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2025. The meeting was attended by high-level representatives of the South African Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the diplomatic corps, think tanks and the media, including the former Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Naledi Pandor, who currently chairs the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The meeting was attended by the Polish Ambassador Adam Burakowski, the EU Ambassador Sandra Kramer and the Chief Executive for Central and Eastern Europe, Phumzile Mazibuko.
Ambassador Adam Burakowski spoke about the assumptions and goals that Poland would like to achieve during its EU Council Presidency. EU Ambassador Sandra Kramer presented the priorities of the new European Commission and Director Phumzile Mazibuko spoke about the priorities of the leadership of the G20 group, which SA assumed on 1 December. Director Mazibuko also mentioned her recent visit to Poland. She emphasised that one of the assumptions of the Polish presidency of the EU Council is particularly close to the assumptions of South Africa in the G20 group, namely food security and maintaining peace in the world. The speakers also referred to the issue of the ongoing war in Ukraine and support for Ukraine. The event attracted great interest and had a very good turnout, around 80 participants.
