The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria commemorates outstanding Poles
21.12.2020
2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Karol Wojtyła, known to the whole world as Pope John Paul II, and the 210th anniversary of the birth of Fryderyk Chopin. John Paul II proved to be an advocate of dialogue whose activity dominated and influenced the history of the 20th century. He was a great religious leader who touched consciences and who never forgot his roots. Fryderyk Chopin is one of the greatest, most original and innovative composers in history. Chopin's strikingly distinct style, recognizable after just a few chords, is internally rich and varied. The works of Fryderyk Chopin greatly influenced the further development of piano music in the 19th century.
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria organized two classical music concerts to commemorate the memory of these two outstanding and most recognizable Poles, their achievements and contribution to the world heritage. Ambassador Andrzej Kanthak gave an occasional speech in which he emphasized the importance of old Polish traditions and customs in maintaining national identity, nurturing Polishness and developing national, civic and cultural awareness.
The concerts performed by the phenomenal South African ensemble Charl du Plessis Trio and the Polish artist, Zbigniew Kobak, met with great interest from the audience. The Charl du Plessis Trio is one of South Africa's most versatile and respected bands. The diverse style of music performed by the artists distinguishes them from other instrumental groups. The Trio consists of: Charl du Plessis (piano), Werner Spies (bass) and Peter Auret (drums). Zbigniew Kobak, a talented Polish multi-instrumentalist, has been performing with great success on world stages for over 30 years.
The concerts organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria were also a special occasion to present the outstandingly talented Simamkele Nela - the rising star of the opera world. Only 17 years old, the brilliant artist, a student at Sinikiwe High School in Mdantsane, is gifted with a magical voice, full of expressive soprano. Situated near East London "township" Mdantsane is one of South Africa's poorest regions. Simamkele Neli herself admits that music has become her escape. When she sings, she feels free and happy. Sinikiwe High School is one of the schools that benefit from the assistance provided by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria.
After the artistic part, the invited guests could learn about the rich tradition of Polish cuisine. Pierogi, bigos, or traditional vegetable salad were invariably very popular.
The concerts were organized with all precautions and observance of the South African sanitary regime regarding the principles of safe functioning during the coronavirus pandemic, i.e. respecting social distances, wearing masks, measuring the temperature and disinfecting.
