The Tengeru cemetery is the largest Polish cemetery in East Africa, with over 150 Polish exiles from the Second World War. They belonged to the civilians accompanying General Anders' army on its journey from the Soviet Union to Iran and Palestine, and then were transported and settled in British colonies and territories, including in the area of today's Tanzania. They established Polish settlements here, the largest of which was located in Tengeru (approx. 5,000 inhabitants). At the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, some of them emigrated to Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries, but some remained in Tanzania. The traces of the Polish presence of those times are 6 cemeteries, under the care of the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam and successively renovated.
