As part of the 2024 edition of the “ZIFF Goes Mainland” Film Festival, held from October 22 to November 21, 2024, films from African countries and ten European nations, including Poland and Ukraine, were presented.
The EU Delegation, along with the representations of Belgium, Finland, France, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden based in Dar es Salaam, as well as the Embassy of Ukraine headquartered in Nairobi, once again joined forces to showcase their cinematic productions. Screenings took place in various Tanzanian cities: Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Arusha, Iringa, and Mwanza.
Representatives of the Polish diplomatic mission participated in the festival's inauguration at the French Institute in Dar es Salaam. The event opened with the screening of the critically acclaimed Sudanese film “Goodbye Julia”, directed by Mohamed Kordofani. The film tells the story of Mona, a retired singer from northern Sudan seeking redemption after covering up a murder, as she cares for the widow of the deceased, Julia, and her son.
The festival concluded with the screening of the Polish film “Feast of Fire” (2023), directed by Kinga Dębska, which received accolades at the 48th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. The screening took place on November 21 at the Goethe Institute in Dar es Salaam. The event was attended by members of the Polish diaspora, the local community, and Embassy staff, led by the mission’s head Katarzyna Sobiecka, who opened the event and introduced the film to the audience.
The viewers had the opportunity to experience the touching story of two sisters, Anastazja and Łucja, who, despite life’s challenges and imposed limitations, strive to fulfill their dreams with the support of their loved ones. The film is an adaptation of Jakub Małecki’s novel, which earned the prestigious Cyprian Kamil Norwid Award in 2021.
