We visited the Polish Cemetery in Tengeru

The Deputy Consul at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dar es Salaam, Krystyna Fatyga, visited the Polish refugee cemetery in Tengeru along with participants of the World Esperanto Congress, which took place this year in Arusha.

During the visit to this largest and best-preserved burial site of Polish citizens in Tanzania, and in all of Africa, located in the Arusha region, the Deputy Consul Krystyna Fatyga, representing the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam, shared the history of the site with the Polish guests. The cemetery is the resting place of 150 Polish exiles from World War II who accompanied General Anders' army on its journey from the Soviet Union to Iran and Palestine, and were later transported and settled in British colonies, including the territory of what was then Tanganyika, now Tanzania. They established Polish settlements, the largest of which was in Tengeru, with a population of about 5,000 residents. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, some of them emigrated to the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries, while others remained in Tanzania.

Our mission cares for six cemeteries where the graves of civilians who accompanied Anders' Army and arrived in Tanganyika in 1942 are located.
